ACE IT

Allows high school students to take the technical (in-school) training portion of an apprenticeship, resulting in both high school credits and credit towards completion of an apprenticeship program. Programs are offered as partnerships between school districts and post-secondary institutions, and classes are often taught at colleges.

Apprentice

The term used to describe individuals registered in an ITA apprenticeship industry training program.

Secondary School Apprenticeships

Students can begin the work-based training portion an apprenticeship while still in high school and to earn high school credits. Apprenticeships are paid, so students earn money for working part time while going to school.

Foundation Program

A type of pre-apprenticeship program that provides trainees with the basic knowledge and skills needed for entry into a particular occupation. They are typically conducted in a classroom or shop setting, and do not involve any significant work-based training component.

Industry

Employers and their associated organizations, including sponsors of apprentices, within the various sectors (e.g. forestry, construction, tourism, etc.) and sub-sectors of the British Columbia economy.

Journeyperson

An expert provincial or inter-provincial certification in their trade (see Red Seal). The journeyperson is responsible for mentoring and training the apprentice in the workplace. Once an apprentice is certified, they become a journeyperson.

Red Seal Program

There are 47 Red Seal trades available in B.C. The inter-provincial Red Seal Program for trades certification gives tradespeople greater mobility and means that your skills will be recognized throughout Canada.

Sponsor

A person or organization registered with the Industry Training Authority willing and able to ensure the apprentice receives training and related practical experience in the tasks, activities and functions that are carried out in that occupation. The sponsor recommends for certification an apprentice who has met the established standards for the Industry Training Program. A sponsor must be a legal entity other than an individual, or an individual who is a certified tradesperson or has been granted ITA equivalency status for the relevant trade.

Tag

One-word descriptors assigned to profiles on theskilledlife.com. You can assign as many tags to a profile as you like. Tagging allows you to assign information to a profile rather than fitting your information into preconceived categories (although we’ve assigned categories too, just in case).

Ticket

Certification or a government--issued credential that shows you are qualified in a particular trade.
