Pipefitters use blueprints and project specifications to construct and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals and fuel. Steamfitters are typically Pipefitters who specialize in pipe systems that move liquids or gases under high pressure. Pipefitters, steamfitters and sprinkler system installers construct , install and repair piping systems for industrial processes, heating and fire protection. Duties overlap and some people who do these jobs are qualified in all three areas. These duties include:

Read blueprints. Plumbing and heating systems must be installed according to the building or project blueprints.

Order materials and figure out the work order. Piping systems can be very complex. Junction points and controls must be identified and connected in a precise sequence.

Trouble shoot and repair problems. Tracking down a problem in a piping system requires skill and concentration. Repairing systems often results in the addition of new components to an existing system.

Modify existing systems to meet code. Sprinkler system installers must test the flow rates and efficiency of piping and the responsiveness and accuracy of heat sensors, and check for the right system controls and remote monitoring panels.

Place supply orders and maintain a working inventory. Most companies do not want to maintain an extensive inventory. You will anticipate the parts you'll need for a job and order them as required. This method of keeping an inventory is known as just-in-time delivery.

Install micro electric controls. Industrial piping and sprinkler systems are often monitored and controlled by microprocessor signal control panels. Setting up these systems requires an advanced knowledge of programming.
