Security Alarm Installer falls under the broader category of Electronic Service Technicians. In general, these workers do similar types of work.
Install upgrades to equipment. More equipment than ever before comes equipped with programmable logic controls. These allow equipment to be updated to work better or incorporate new features without replacing the whole machine. Your job as an electronic service technician is to install these updates in offices and homes.
Replace components. In many cases the internal components of equipment is so complex that it is cheaper to replace the entire component than figure out how to fix it. Your job will be to diagnose problems and order replacement components when this is more economical for the customer.
Service components. Sometimes components can be rebuilt in workshops. Where components can't be rebuilt, they can be disassembled. Service technicians perform this work and make recommendations on whether to repair or recycle components.
Test equipment and diagnose problems. Service technicians who work in repair centres receive equipment with a description of the problem attached. They then diagnose the cause of the problem and make repairs or determine if it is more economical to replace the item.
Communicate with clients. Communication with the client is an important aspect of your work. Clear, concise explanations will help you create successful relationships with your clients, many of whom you will see regularly for service and maintenance calls. For example, if your job is to maintain an alarm system in a secure office building, being able to explain how the system works may avoid a potential theft, by letting the client know the whereabouts of surveillance cameras and entry point monitors. It will also be important for you to speak clearly with your co-workers so miscommunication does not cause problems during complicated repairs.
