Power Line Technician

Power Line Technicians construct, maintain and repair the overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems that make up the electrical power grid. This involves putting up and maintaining electrical poles, towers and guy wires as well as installing or repairing the live-line wiring and other components required to connect power distribution and transmission networks. Power Line Technician is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program. (Find out about Red Seal in the Trades Lingo section.)

What do these workers do?

Inspect and test overhead and underground power lines and auxiliary equipment.

Install and maintain street lighting systems.

Work at heights on poles and towers, either on a ladder or in a hydraulic bucket. In some cases, they are required to work in confined spaces like trenches or tunnels to install underground lines or equipment.

Employed by electric power companies, electrical contractors and public utilities

Often highly mobile and their skills are in demand across Canada and in the United States.
