Plasterers do a variety of work , from coating new houses with stucco to restoring finely detailed plaster cove moldings in old houses and buildings. The work of plasterers(stucco masons) includes:
Prepare surfaces for plaster coating by installing and fitting vapour barriers and moisture-proof membranes.
Build the support structure or lath to which the plaster or stucco coating will be applied.
Repair and renew old plaster coatings, using modern plaster board or traditional three-coat plastering methods. This is common in old houses where the ceiling may have sagged off the lathing.
Make complex moldings and wall decorations from plaster. Workers who develop this art and craft aspect of the trade find their jobs very satisfying.
Mix and measure plaster compounds for different uses and weather conditions. This sounds easy, but knowing what ingredients, traditional and modern, to use and in what proportion is one of the main specializations that plasterers learn.
Trowel and float stucco coatings onto exterior walls. Part of this work involves building and using scaffolding reach all the areas of the wall.
