What do these workers do?

At the heart of large industrial plants and mills, large machines and mechanical devices form the production line or processing chain. These machines must be installed, adjusted and maintained. Construction millwrights usually do the installation. Maintenance and adjustments are done by industrial mechanics. See the profiles for each occupation in this guide for more information about work duties. Both occupations share these duties:

Read blueprints, work plans, schematics and process control charts. Workers must read and understand the detailed specifications for the installation and operation of machinery and be able to keep machinery adjusted to designed tolerances and specifications.

Keep careful maintenance records and logs. Log books and records can help millwrights and mechanics anticipate when routine maintenance will be needed, and they allow them to make recommendations to the machine operators.

Read and remember operations manuals and technical specifications. It is not necessary to remember every detail for every piece of machinery, but the millwright or mechanic must know where to find this information and be able to understand and follow the specifications.
