Boilermaker (Construction Boilermaker)
print this page

Construction Boilermakers use blueprints and other plans to construct, install, and repair boilers, tanks, and other large containers that hold liquids and gases. These vessels or boilers are used to contain everything from steam in an electric power plant to oil, chemicals and other liquids that we use daily. A Construction Boilermaker is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program. (Find out about Red Seal in the Trades Lingo section.)

What do these workers do?

Work on heat exchangers and other heavy metal structures and use brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters and other tools during the course of their work.

Inspect and maintain these structures to ensure safety because boilers and other heavy metal products typically last 20 to 40 years or more.

Fit and join tubes, gauges, valves and other components that attach to the boiler or vessel and test these systems for leaks or other defects.

Install heat-resistant materials around the systems to protect other workers.
