Automatic Transmission Service Technician is a person who removes, completely disassembles, checks, replaces worn and broken parts, overhauls completely any automotive transmission. Able to diagnose any road problems.

Perform fluid analyses. Microscopic and chemical analyses of oil and coolants can pinpoint engine and hydraulic problems before they cause costly damage. While only a few diesel mechanics take the training to do these analyses, all mechanics learn to interpret the computerized test results.

Inspect and diagnose transmission systems. You use a variety of testing equipment, such as onboard and hand-held diagnostic computers or compression gauges, to quickly and accurately identify the problem. You must decide if a component can be repaired or replaced and, in most cases, your estimate of repair costs is discussed with the customer before proceeding with repairs.

Compare the diagnostic readouts to benchmarked standards. You can accurately interpret diagnostic results and determine the necessary repairs. Computerized systems also provide automatic updates to technical manuals and unlimited access to manufacturers' service information, technical service bulletins and other databases that keep you up to date on problems and new procedures.

Repair the damage, inspect the completed work and test the vehicle's performance. As a transmission specialist, you adjust, repair and replace parts of transmission systems, such as gear trains, couplings and hydraulic pumps. After repairs are complete, you assess the vehicle with a computerized device, then take it for a test drive.

Use hand tools and specialized automotive repair equipment. You will use a variety of tools, such as pneumatic wrenches, machine tools, and jacks and hoists. Common hand tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches, will also be used.

Perform scheduled maintenance service. During routine service inspections, you will repair or replace worn parts before they cause breakdowns and to maintain optimum performance.

Communicate with customers. Your ability to communicate technical information in ways your customers can understand will help them make informed decisions.
